Help and answers
The questions players ask most — about installing, playing together and fixing what broke.
Getting started
- Yes, completely. The launcher is open source under the MIT license, and nothing in it is paid. Donations are voluntary and only bring thanks you can see: a Discord role, a badge by your nickname and a place on the sponsor wall.
- The full source code is public on GitHub, so anyone can check what the launcher does. Download it only from this site or from GitHub Releases — copies on other sites may be modified. Minecraft, Java and loaders come from the official servers, and from the Grubie mirror only when those are out of reach.
- Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit) with an installer, and Linux as an AppImage or a .deb package. There is no macOS build yet. The interface speaks English, Russian and Ukrainian.
- For official servers, sign in with Microsoft — that is your Minecraft licence. Ely.by and Discord accounts bring skins, capes, friends and voice chat. An offline account plays without the internet, but cannot join official servers, wear catalog skins, publish modpacks or use the assistant.
- No. The launcher downloads the right Java for every Minecraft version on its own — Java 8 for old versions, newer ones for modern versions — and can clean up the copies no version needs any more.
- Vanilla, Forge, NeoForge, Fabric and Quilt, plus loaders for old versions: Legacy Fabric, Babric, Ornithe and Better than Adventure. Servers run on Vanilla, Paper, Spigot, Bukkit, Forge, NeoForge, Fabric and Quilt.
Download and updates
- Windows SmartScreen warns about any program it hasn't seen often: click “More info”, then “Run anyway”. If an antivirus quarantines launcher files, add the launcher and its data folder to the exclusions — a locked file is the usual reason a mod won't switch off or an instance won't delete.
- In the download window every file has a “Download via mirror” link — the same file from our own servers. Inside the launcher you can switch the download source to the Grubie mirror for Minecraft, Java and loaders too. If neither answers, change your DNS (for example to 1.1.1.1) or use a VPN.
- On its own: a new version downloads in the background and installs itself. If GitHub is out of reach, the update comes from the mirror. What changed in each version is on the What's new page.
- Yes. Drag a .mrpack or .zip onto the launcher window: it recognises Modrinth packs, CurseForge zip packs and exports from Prism Launcher, MultiMC and Grubie itself.
- Versions, Java, mods, worlds and settings live in one data folder, and you can move it to another drive in the settings. The storage cleanup there shows what takes the space and removes the cache, unused Java and orphaned files.
Playing together
- Launch the instance you want to play, open world access and choose who can join. Your friend presses “Play” on your world in their launcher: Grubie installs the same modpack and version for them and connects them. No Hamachi, no port forwarding.
- No, the launcher does it for them. A shared modpack keeps itself in sync too: when you change it, everyone who installed it gets the new version.
- Turn on public access for the instance in the launcher. It gets a share code friends paste into their launcher, and it shows up in the modpack catalog on this site with a page of its own.
- Yes. Every group of friends has its own chat and voice room. Push-to-talk listens to a global key, so it keeps working while you are in the game; noise suppression and echo cancellation are in the settings.
When something breaks
- The launcher reads the log and shows the cause with a suggested fix — a missing dependency, a mod for the wrong version, too little memory. If the cause isn't recognised, send the crash for AI analysis: it names the likely culprit and what to try. No key, no setup.
- Run an integrity check on the instance — it fetches damaged or missing files again. Make sure every mod is for the instance's Minecraft version and loader, and update your graphics driver from the NVIDIA, AMD or Intel site.
- Give the game the memory your modpack needs — but not all of it: too much is as bad as too little. Add performance mods such as Sodium, Lithium and FerriteCore. The assistant can look at your instance and suggest what to change.
Account and site
- Press “Sign in with launcher” at the top of the page. The launcher must be installed and running: it shows a code — allow the sign-in only if the codes match.
- Both are switches in the launcher's privacy settings. A hidden profile disappears from the site; leaving the leaderboard keeps your achievements but takes your name off the public list.
- Most of your data stays on your computer. Our servers keep what the online features need: your account, friends, published modpacks and skins, achievement points. The details are in the privacy policy.
